Davis Kiwanis Club Brochure

More than 600,000 men and women around the world proudly wear the “K” of Kiwanis.  Though these people have many responsibilities and their time is valuable, they attend Kiwanis meetings each week, and actively participate in community service projects.  Why are these men and women involved?

What Kiwanis Is

Kiwanis is a world-wide service organization appealing to men and women who have the desire to become involved in making their communities a better place to  live. As a group, these members achieve what individuals cannot do alone. Working together, Kiwanians voluntarily share the challenge of community involvement and leadership, assuming personal responsibility for humanitarian and civic projects in our community. These projects are mostly local in nature.

Some Specifics:

Kiwanis is a service organization not a social club, although enduring friendships are created through the Kiwanis spirit of fellowship that comes from a mutual effort on community projects.
Kiwanis fosters principles of good citizenship and human values.
Kiwanis is often a public forum – but never a political circle.  Meeting programs frequently provide platforms for a balanced and impartial presentation of public issues.
Kiwanis makes its activities known.  It is not a secret society.  There are no private rituals.  Public awareness of its activities is sought because it increases support for Kiwanis service efforts.
And finally, the actions of the club are guided by the needs of our communities.

The Name
The name “Kiwanis” is a coined word taken from an Indian tribe which lived in the area where Kiwanis was founded.  It means “self expression” or “to make oneself known.”

The Motto
“Serving the children of the world” is the motto under which Kiwanis has advanced and become widely known.  Kiwanis was founded in Detroit Michigan on January 21, 1915.

The Kiwanis Club of Greater Davis
Our local club was established in February 1966.  Our focus is to determine the needs of the youth & seniors in our communities and strive to meet those needs.  While consistently maintaining the traditions and values established by Kiwanis International, we pride ourselves on the genuine atmosphere of camaraderie generated at the lively and fast paced luncheon meetings.  We currently meet at Symposium Restaurant in Davis each Thursday from 12:10 to 1:30 p.m.

Our club strives to maintain a diverse membership of about 35-40 members, feeling this size fits our community service and fund-raising efforts, yet enables a sense of fellowship and friendship with each member.

Some of our past/current community service projects:

Meals on Wheels
Davis Community Meals
UCD Circle K sponsorship
Kiwanis Family House
Builders Club at Harper Jr. High School
